Storm-Damaged Trees: Should You Repair or Remove?
How to tell whether a storm-damaged tree can be saved or has to come down. A PR arborist's honest checklist for the days after a hurricane.
After a storm passes, the hardest calls are not the trees lying flat across the driveway. Those are obvious. The hard ones are the trees still standing - the flamboyán with half its crown gone, the mango leaning a few degrees more than it used to, the mahogany with a long crack running down the trunk. They look wounded but alive, and the question is whether to spend money saving them or spend it taking them down.
Here is how we make that call in the field, so you can look at your own trees with the same eyes before you decide.
First, make sure it is safe to even look
Before you walk up to any storm-damaged tree, check what is around and above it. A limb that is cracked but hung up in the canopy - what climbers call a widow-maker - can drop with no warning. Never stand under a damaged tree, and never touch a tree that is contacting or near a power line. In Puerto Rico after a big storm, downed lines and energized trees cause more injuries than the wind itself. If a line is involved, keep everyone back and call us and LUMA, not a ladder.
The questions that decide repair vs remove
1. How much of the crown is gone?
The canopy is the tree's engine. A healthy tree that lost a few branches will push new growth and recover fine. But once a tree loses roughly half or more of its living canopy, it is fighting to feed itself, and in our climate that stress opens the door to borers and rot. A mango or aguacate stripped to bare structure can sometimes come back over two or three seasons if the trunk and roots are sound - but a tree that is both defoliated and structurally cracked is usually not worth the wait.
2. Is the main trunk cracked or split?
This is the one that ends most debates. Surface bark tears heal. A deep vertical crack through the trunk, or a split where the trunk forks, does not - it is a structural failure that only gets worse as the tree moves in the next wind. If you can see into the trunk, or the crack runs more than a few inches deep, that tree is a hazard. Removal is the honest answer.
3. Did the root plate lift?
Walk around the base after the rain. If you see the soil heaved up on one side, cracked in a circle around the trunk, or roots pulled partly out of the ground, the tree's anchor is compromised. A leaning tree with a lifted root plate is not going to re-root itself, no matter how green it still looks. This is common in Puerto Rico's saturated clay soils after days of rain, and it is one of the clearest remove signals there is.
4. How bad is the lean, and did it change?
A tree that has leaned the same way for years is usually fine. A tree that leaned during this storm - especially with fresh soil cracking at the base - is a different animal. New lean plus lifted roots equals a tree on its way down. A slight new lean on a tree with intact roots may be correctable, but that is a judgment call for someone standing next to it.
5. What is the tree, and what would it hit?
Species matters. Brittle, fast-growing trees like the African tulip (tulipán africano) shatter easily and are rarely worth heroic repair. A mature, structurally sound mahogany or ceiba is worth more effort to save. And a damaged tree over open lawn is a very different risk than the same tree leaning over your bedroom, your car, or the neighbor's roof. Target matters as much as the tree does.
When repair is the right call
Plenty of storm-damaged trees are worth saving, and cutting them down is a waste. Consider repair when:
- The trunk and main branches are sound, with only smaller limbs lost or torn.
- Damage is limited to the canopy and the tree is an otherwise healthy species for our climate.
- The root plate is firm and the tree has not shifted.
- The tree has real value - shade over the house, fruit, or it is a mature specimen that would take decades to replace.
Repair usually means corrective pruning: cleaning up torn and broken limbs with proper cuts so wounds seal instead of rot, reducing weight on damaged sides, and sometimes cabling or bracing a limb that is worth keeping. Done right, this is far cheaper than removal and lets a good tree recover.
When removal is the honest answer
We recommend removal when:
- The trunk is split or deeply cracked.
- The root plate has lifted or the tree gained a new lean.
- More than half the crown is gone on an already-stressed or short-lived species.
- The tree is a hazard to a structure, and the cost and risk of trying to save it outweigh replacing it.
There is no shame in removing a tree that lost the fight. A compromised tree left standing is a bill you pay later - usually at 2 a.m. in the next storm, on top of your roof.
The mistake we see most after a storm
The most common error is not cutting good trees - it is topping the survivors out of fear. After Maria and Fiona, a lot of homeowners had crews come through and cut every remaining tree back to stubs, thinking it made them safer. It does the opposite. Topping forces weak, fast regrowth attached to the outside of old wood, and those new limbs tear off even more easily in the next storm. If a tree is worth keeping, it is worth pruning correctly, not butchering.
