How Hurricanes Damage Trees: What Survives and What Doesn't
How hurricane wind actually breaks trees in Puerto Rico - the failure patterns, which species survive, and how to spot a tree that's already compromised.
After a big storm, people ask the same question standing in their yard: why did that tree come down and the one next to it barely lost a leaf? It usually looks random. It almost never is. Hurricane wind breaks trees in a handful of predictable ways, and once you know the patterns you can look at your own trees before the next season and make a real call about which ones are a problem.
We have cleared trees across Puerto Rico after Maria, Fiona, and Ernesto. Here is what actually happens to a tree in a hurricane, and why some make it while others don't.
Wind does not push a tree over evenly
A tree in 100+ mph wind is not getting a steady shove. It is getting hit by gusts that load the canopy, release, and load it again from a slightly different angle. That repeated loading is what does the damage. The canopy acts like a sail, and every branch and leaf adds surface area for the wind to grab.
This is why two things matter more than raw wind speed: how much sail the canopy presents, and how sound the wood and roots are underneath it. A dense, top-heavy canopy on a shallow-rooted tree is the worst combination. A thin, well-pruned canopy on a deep-rooted species is the best.
The four ways trees fail
Almost every storm failure we see falls into one of these:
1. Uprooting (the whole tree tips over)
The root plate lifts out of the ground and the tree goes down more or less intact, often taking a chunk of sidewalk, fence, or septic line with it. This is the classic failure for trees with shallow or compromised root systems - and in Puerto Rico that is made worse by saturated soil. By the time hurricane winds arrive, days of rain have often turned the ground to mud. Roots that would hold in dry soil simply pull free. Trees planted in shallow fill over rock, common in a lot of PR developments, are especially prone to this.
2. Trunk snap
The trunk breaks partway up, usually at a point of existing weakness - an old wound, a cavity, a spot where decay has hollowed the wood, or an included bark seam where two stems grew together. Healthy solid wood rarely snaps clean. When a trunk breaks, there was almost always a hidden defect there first.
3. Branch and limb failure
Individual large limbs tear off, often at weak V-shaped crotches where bark is pinched between two branches (included bark). This is the most common failure and the one that does the most damage to roofs and cars, because the limb comes down fast and heavy.
4. Windthrow of the canopy
The tree survives but is stripped and deformed - major leaders broken, one side of the crown gone, the whole thing leaning. It is alive but often no longer structurally sound, which is a problem we will come back to.
Why some species survive and others don't
Species matters enormously, and Puerto Rico's mix makes this vivid.
Palms are built for this. A royal palm or coconut palm has a flexible trunk and a small crown that the wind passes through instead of grabbing. Palms bend, shed a few fronds, and stand back up. This is why you see palms standing after a storm that flattened the hardwoods around them. Their root system is a fibrous mass that holds well even in wet soil.
African tulip is the opposite. Beautiful tree, terrible wood. It is fast-growing, brittle, and shallow-rooted - a species that reliably fails in storms. If you have one near your house, it deserves a hard look before hurricane season.
Flamboyán sits in the middle. The wide, spreading canopy that makes it gorgeous also makes it a big sail, and its wood is only moderately strong. A healthy, well-structured flamboyán with a thinned canopy can ride out a storm. An overgrown one with heavy horizontal limbs and included bark is a candidate for limb failure.
Mango trees are heavy and dense, and mature ones carry a lot of canopy weight. They hold up better than African tulip but worse than a palm, and their big limbs can fail hard.
Mahogany and ceiba are strong-wooded and, when mature and healthy, among the more storm-resistant hardwoods here - but their size means that when they do fail, the damage is severe.
The trees that were already in trouble
Here is the part most homeowners miss. The storm rarely creates the weakness. It exposes it. Trees that come down in a hurricane usually had one or more of these conditions beforehand:
- Decay and cavities - fungus, hollow spots, soft wood at the base
- Root damage - trenching for utilities or a driveway cut major roots years ago
- Included bark - tight V-shaped unions instead of strong U-shaped ones
- Previous storm damage - a tree hit by the last hurricane and never properly assessed
- Poor previous pruning - especially "topping," which forces weak regrowth that snaps easily
- A heavy lean with lifting soil on the opposite side
You can spot most of these from the ground with a careful walk-around, which is exactly what a pre-season inspection is for.
The survivor that isn't safe
A tree that lived through the storm is not automatically a tree you can trust. Some of the most dangerous trees we remove are storm survivors - trunks with fresh cracks, roots partially lifted, major limbs hanging, or a new lean that wasn't there before. These trees are compromised and can come down in the next moderate wind, or drop a hanging limb on someone with no warning. After any major storm, the survivors deserve an inspection as much as the obvious casualties.
What you can do before the next storm
You cannot hurricane-proof a tree, and anyone who promises to is selling you something. But you can meaningfully reduce risk:
- Thin dense canopies so wind passes through instead of loading the whole crown. This is real storm prep - not topping, which makes things worse.
- Remove deadwood and hanging limbs before they become projectiles.
- Identify and deal with the known-brittle trees (African tulip especially) near structures.
- Get a professional eye on anything large near your house - decay and root problems are easy to miss and expensive to ignore.
The goal is not to cut everything down. Good trees, properly maintained, are worth keeping and even help shelter your property. The goal is to find the two or three trees that are genuine problems and deal with them on a calm sunny day instead of at 2 a.m. in the wind.
