Hollow Trees: Are They Still Safe?
A hollow tree is not automatically dangerous. How much sound wood a hollow trunk needs, the one-third rule, and when one in Puerto Rico must come down.
A hollow tree looks alarming, and homeowners often assume it means the tree is dying and about to fall. That is not how trees work. Plenty of hollow trees stand for decades and survive hurricanes, because the wood that holds a tree up is not in the center. Whether a hollow tree is safe comes down to how much sound wood is left in the shell, where the hollow is, and what else is going wrong at the same time.
Here is how to think about it honestly.
Why a tree can be hollow and still strong
The center of a mature trunk is heartwood - older wood that no longer moves water and is not alive in the way the outer layers are. The living, growing, load-bearing action happens in the outer rings and the ring of new wood just under the bark. A trunk is closer to a pipe than a solid rod: most of its strength against bending and wind is in the outer wall, not the core.
That is why a tree can rot or hollow out in the middle and keep standing. As long as the outer shell of sound wood is thick enough and continuous, the tree can still resist the forces on it. Nature figured this out long before engineers did - a hollow tube uses material efficiently.
So a hollow by itself is not a death sentence. The real question is: how much good wall is left, and is it a complete ring or broken open?
The rule of thumb arborists use
There is a widely used guideline for judging hollow trunks. It compares the thickness of the remaining sound wood wall to the radius of the trunk.
As a general rule, when the sound wood wall is less than about one-third of the trunk's radius, the risk of failure climbs sharply. Put another way, if a trunk is hollow through roughly 70% or more of its diameter, leaving only a thin shell, it has lost most of its strength and should be treated as high risk.
Between those points there is a judgment zone, and it is exactly where the other factors below decide the outcome. This one-third guideline is a starting point, not a guarantee - it assumes an even, complete shell and no other defects. Real trees are messier, which is why the number is a screen, not a verdict.
The opening changes everything
A closed hollow - a rotten core inside a complete ring of sound wood - is far stronger than a hollow with a big opening or cavity in the side. Think of a section of pipe versus a pipe with a long slot cut out of it. The slotted pipe bends and buckles at a fraction of the load. The same is true of trees.
So when you look at a hollow trunk, the size of the opening matters as much as the thickness of the wall:
- A small opening in an otherwise complete shell keeps most of the tube's strength.
- A large, tall opening - a big wound, a seam, or a cavity that runs up the trunk - removes the "closed tube" advantage and makes the remaining wood much weaker than its thickness suggests.
A trunk that is hollow with a wide, open cavity, especially one that runs vertically up the stem, is more concerning than the wall thickness alone would tell you.
What makes a hollow tree dangerous: the stacking factors
A hollow rarely fails on its own. It fails when it stacks up with other problems. Run down this list, because two or more of these on a hollow tree over a target is when we get serious about removal:
- A thin remaining wall (past that one-third guideline)
- A large opening or cavity, especially a tall vertical one
- A lean, which puts steady off-center load on the compromised trunk
- A heavy, one-sided canopy that levers on the weak point
- Fungus or conks at the base, meaning the decay is active and spreading
- Cracks running from the cavity
- Hollowing low on the trunk or into the root flare, which is worse than a hollow higher up, because the base carries the whole tree
- A big target underneath - a house, a road, a place people gather
A short, well-balanced, hollow trunk with a thick wall in the middle of an open field is low risk. A tall, leaning, hollow trunk with a big open cavity and base conks, overhanging a bedroom, is a different situation entirely - even if both are "just hollow."
Checking a hollow tree at home
You can gather useful information from the ground without taking any risk:
- Look at the opening. Rough out how much of the trunk's diameter is hollow and how thick the sound wall looks around it. Thin shell, big opening - concern.
- Sound it out. Tapping the trunk with a mallet or the back of an axe can reveal hollows: solid wood gives a sharp, tight sound; hollow or rotten wood sounds dull, drummy, or hollow. This is rough, not exact, but it tells you the hollow is bigger than the opening if the drummy sound extends well past it.
- Check for the stacking factors above - lean, one-sided canopy, base fungus, cracks.
- Look low. Hollowing and soft wood at the base and root flare is the most serious location.
What you cannot do reliably from the ground is measure the true wall thickness all the way around, or know how far the decay has spread inside. That takes hands-on assessment, and for valuable or borderline trees arborists use instruments that measure the sound wood without cutting the tree open. Do not climb a hollow tree, put a ladder against it, or drill into it to "see how far it goes" - drilling spreads decay and a hollow trunk is exactly the wood you should not trust your weight to.
Hollow does not always mean removal
Some hollow trees are worth keeping and managing rather than cutting. A structurally sound hollow tree can sometimes be helped along with crown reduction - taking height and weight off the top to cut the wind load and leverage on the trunk - buying years of safe life. A hollow tree that is a genuine hazard over a target, or that has crossed into thin-wall, big-cavity, decaying territory, should come down. Which path is right depends on the numbers you can only get in person.
For our island there is one extra consideration: even a hollow tree that reads as borderline-safe in calm weather is being asked to hold up in hurricane-force wind every season. That raises the bar. A hollow we might monitor in a calm climate, we often recommend reducing or removing here if it stands over something that matters.
